Anytime Todd Snider comes to INdianapolis, it seems to be a Bob and Tom reunion, since the three of them are credited for writing Beer Run. The house was crowded. We sat in the balcony. The show was outstanding.

Another great outdoor concert promotion form radio station X103. Soundgarden anchored the headline spot, with plenty of quality support from Bush and Buckcherry. AWOL Nation, The Virgin Marys and New Politics were also on hand. I was a little surprised that the Buckcherry set was as short as it was and that AWOLN actually trumped them on the marquee. Nevertheless, all bands participating gave very good performances.

Excellent evening at one of the city's oldest and best ourdoor venues. The bandshell is a step back in time. Sound is so perfect here too. The Bottle Rockets gave a spirited set with straight forward rock infused Americana music.

James McMurtry played with a hat a beard and full band. Stepping up to the stage he had evidently been into the wine cellar before the show and tripped on the first step to the bandshell. Once he stepped up to the microphone, however, it was a completely different story and most would probably not recognize his intoxication at that point. Setlist was generous and favored a wide collection of his best penned songs. He is easily among the very best lyricists in American music, twisting tales of acute observation.

Again, another beautiful evening and back to the Rathskeller for more live music. This time around, 10,000 Maniacs, sans Natalie Merchant of course. Good size crowd on hand and evidently the very first time the maniacs have even played Indianapolis. $25 advance ticket was steep, but day of show tickets were $35. Some folks walked away from the gate in sticker shock. I mean really. That is a lot to sit on picnic tables and listen essentially to a 10,000 maniacs cover band.

Blackberry Smoke. One of the hardest touring bands in America today. Winning fans over show after show. Plenty of energy and musicianship.

A Thousand Horses were added to the bill. They are represented by Doc McGee Entertainment, the same guy who brought you Bon Jovi, Motley Crue and KISS. A mediocre band at best, A Thousand Horses were in need of lots of practice and time to craft their musicianship and show. Butchered one of my favorite Stones songs, Dead Flowers.

Gary Jeffries, a local boy done good, started the show with his brand of southern rock. Formerly the lead singer of a johnny come lately hair band called Asphalt Ballet, Jeffries has dropped the LA music scene for down home southern rockin'

Showed up at the venue just before Cody and band did their soundcheck. Cody and Plato were hanging around in the alley behind. Chatted a little. Seth James came and went. A few days later he announced he would be leaving The Departed when the show stops in New Braunfels, TX in November. No surprise really. The band has already exchanged the drummer since starting out. The show here in Indianapolis was very lightly attended. Fans who came seemed to enjoy, but the business side says you can't make much money playing to empty halls.

Chris Knight was with full band. Nice to hear him play a full set. The good city of Indianapolis hosted him only once before, many years ago. As Knight pointed out, sadly he lives only 225 miles down the road in KY. Band was okay. He had a decent guitar player, the bass player and drummer were adequate at best. Truthfully I would rather have seen Chris Knight solo without the band. His songs tell darker tales of social dysfunction, rural strife and family secrets.

This was a birthday trip for my 50th, a trip to New York, capped off with one of my favcorite live bands, Reckless Kelly in concert. The venue was interesting, as it was a theatre style venue with a cozy balcony club and a basement bar under the floor of the main hall. The show was stellar as th eband ripped through their brand of country-rock-americana for the NY fans. After the show, the band retreated to the basement bar to hang out with fans. Mostly sat and talked with David Abeyta and Jay Nazz, who were in awe that we flew all the way from Indiana to Ney York City to see the show. Great evening!
