Again, another beautiful evening and back to the Rathskeller for more live music. This time around, 10,000 Maniacs, sans Natalie Merchant of course. Good size crowd on hand and evidently the very first time the maniacs have even played Indianapolis. $25 advance ticket was steep, but day of show tickets were $35. Some folks walked away from the gate in sticker shock. I mean really. That is a lot to sit on picnic tables and listen essentially to a 10,000 maniacs cover band.

Blackberry Smoke. One of the hardest touring bands in America today. Winning fans over show after show. Plenty of energy and musicianship.
A Thousand Horses were added to the bill. They are represented by Doc McGee Entertainment, the same guy who brought you Bon Jovi, Motley Crue and KISS. A mediocre band at best, A Thousand Horses were in need of lots of practice and time to craft their musicianship and show. Butchered one of my favorite Stones songs, Dead Flowers.
Gary Jeffries, a local boy done good, started the show with his brand of southern rock. Formerly the lead singer of a johnny come lately hair band called Asphalt Ballet, Jeffries has dropped the LA music scene for down home southern rockin'

This was a birthday trip for my 50th, a trip to New York, capped off with one of my favcorite live bands, Reckless Kelly in concert. The venue was interesting, as it was a theatre style venue with a cozy balcony club and a basement bar under the floor of the main hall. The show was stellar as th eband ripped through their brand of country-rock-americana for the NY fans. After the show, the band retreated to the basement bar to hang out with fans. Mostly sat and talked with David Abeyta and Jay Nazz, who were in awe that we flew all the way from Indiana to Ney York City to see the show. Great evening! |
