Master of the Shout Blues, H-Bomb Ferguson performed at Corys in Cincinnati over Memorial Day Weekend. We were actually in south-eastern Indiana camping and canoeing for the weekend, but had to seek high ground due to significant rain. So we drove into Cincinnati for a little fun on a Saturday night. Little did we realize at the time that Ferguson was living blues legend. What a show! The colorful wigs and boas were outrageous. H Bomb was incredibly entertainingat roughly 60 years of age.

After seeing a less than impressive Grateful Dead in Indianapolis summer of 1984, this concert marked a starting over point for my love of the Dead. Stories of Jerry Garcia's heroin problems and coma now behind, The Grateful Dead seemed re-energized to enter the 1990's.

My friend Dave took me to this concert kicking and screaming all the way. I didn't really like R.E.M. very much, but he convinced me to give them a chance. I gave it a chance and I still didn't like them. I like a lot of different kinds of music, but R.E.M. no. By the time they played Orange Crush, I thought oh thank God, the show must be close to over. But no, It was only about one third the way through the set. Finally, it's the end of the show as we knew it and I'll be damned if they didn't come out for an encore consisting of not one, but four more songs. So then I thought, oh God what did I do to deserve this? Then the worst of all possible fates, they came back for another encore of not one, but yet four more songs. At this point, I didn't think R.E.M. understood how this works. For an encore you get to do one maybe two more songs. If the crowd just won't leave the building, maybe you come back for one more really special song to close the night. The house lights come on then everybody goes home. Maybe that's why they stopped touring, they couldn't figure out how to close a show.

Backed by the ever capable John Mellencamp Band, James McMurtry assembled a concert set drawn from his debut release, Too Long In The Wasteland. A song called Painting By Numbers was getting some radio play. Fantastic show. We did not stay for Nanci Griffith.
